The stakes linked to cattle breeding in Brazil and the collaboration with Imaflora

Casino Group partners with the Brazilian NGO Imaflora

Given their presence in Latin America, the branches of Casino Group in Brazil are implementing concrete policies and action plans to fight against deforestation, while adapting to local stakes and cooperating with NGOs which are present on the field.

As part of its actions in Brazil, the Group and its GPA and Assai branches work hand-in-hand with the Brazilian NGO IMAFLORA  – Institute of Agricultural and Forest Management and Certification – and take part in actions led jointly by the NGO and the Federal Public Council alongside other actors of the  of the community as part of the Beefontrack program. This program has defined the rules to monitor Brazilian cattle farms and ensure for example that they are not linked with deforestation risks, and these rules are abided by by the branches of Casino Group in Brazil.

Imaflora is an NGO which implements actions contributing to the protection of the environment, the sustainability of natural resources and the improvement of working conditions for agricultural and forestry workers as well as traditional and local communities. The Brazilian NGO offers technical assistance to over 1 000 companies in the forestry and agricultural sectors, and its actions span over more than 76 million hectares of land in Brazil.

Université de la terre - UNESCO

During the Université de la terre sessions at Unesco, Marina Piatto, CEO of the Imaflora NGO, was invited to take part in the Round Table on the topic « Reforest the Earth » alongside other key figures such as the photographer Sébastien Salgado. She talked about the importance of the actions implemented by Imaflora to protect Amazonia.

 

In her speech, she gave insight on the rising awareness in Brazil on the impact of climate change and the necessity to protect the Amazonian Forest. She also mentioned the efforts made by farmers to use more sustainable methods and produce responsibly while preserving the wealth of the Forest.
